"When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking -- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Although we have been enjoying a winter more like the great snow years we fondly remember, spring will come soon. My mind has begun to look ahead to the arrival of the cycling season. I know that there is a mountain bike parked in my garage with a flat rear tire that I didn't get repaired last fall. I'll have to take care of that, or start out borrowing my wife's (Shirley's) mountain bike again this spring … better fix the tire!
It is a good time to go to the garage, basement, wind trainer, or wherever your bikes are stored and take a look at your equipment. Check your bar tape or grips, inspect tire wear, measure that chain and replace it before it is "stretched" and requires you to buy the entire drive train. A $20 chain is a lot less expensive than a $150 drive train. Check your cleats for wear and think about how those shoes felt last season? How about that saddle that wasn't quite right all year? Who knows? You might find yourself in another kind of "cycle", the "buying cycle".
Maybe it's time to think about a new bike. A trip to the local bike shops this time of year gets you thinking to Spring and Summer. There is nothing like a new bike to inspire you to ride it and use it to have a great cycling year in 2008.
The roads and bike paths will be free of snow and ice probably well before the mountain bike trails in the woods this year. Road rides up M-119 (Tunnel of Trees) or any of the great cycling roads through Emmet County north of Harbor Springs, will be ready to ride soon. Spring rains will wash the debris of winter off the roads and help prevent some of those springtime flat tires. The "Little Traverse Wheelway" (bike path) isn't plowed or cleared in the winter and takes a little longer to open up for riding. In some stretches, it is coated in sand thrown from the snowplowing of adjacent roadways. Plans to surface and build additional segments of the "Wheelway" will begin to happen this season.
Tim Calloway, Jerry Keeney, and all the great people of the Harbor Springs Chapter of the North Trail Association will hold work days to clear the trail of winter's windfall trees and brush. Please try to help out if you enjoy riding these great trails on your mountain bike. As a club member you help the Harbor Springs Chapter with financial donations, but you could also help with your individual membership in the N.C.T.A. Please join!
Maybe this is the year you can figure out a way to get extra miles in by riding your bike for transportation to work, shopping or wherever you might normally use a car. There are some incredibly nice "Commuter Bikes" on the market now with features that really do help make bicycle transportation/work transition, easier. Riding to work is a great way to wake up and start your day and the ride home is a great way to unwind. Your body and your mind will appreciate it! And, hey! There's an excuse for a new bike you don't have in your stable yet … "Commuter Bike" … Yeah!
No matter how you ride, why you ride, or where you ride, it's time to Get Ready To Ride!
